Everyday we block access to our servers from those wishing to deface websites or hijack email accounts. Our firewalls send us notifications on each instance. These attacks come from all over the world from botnets, networks of compromised computers.
Broad-based attacks on email accounts are common, basically trying to guess passwords to send nasty bulk email from those accounts. Lately, the favourite attacks are against email accounts starting with admin or accounts, as in admin @your-site-address.com and accounts @your-site-address.com. Admin is often the default user name used for WordPress administrators, a practice that is highly discouraged. If you use WordPress and that is your user name, change it immediately.
Your best defence is a strong password. A strong password combines upper and lower case letters, numbers and other characters like ! ( – & ^. Using a password generator helps significantly (included in our control panels). It is also advisable to not use the same password over and over. If you have trouble remembering passwords, there are several products available that can help in this regard, storing your passwords securely while requiring you to remember only one password. Roboform is a favourite for many.
The next time you are frustrated by having to use complex passwords remember, an email promoting immoral or illegal practices is probably not one you want coming from your email address.
